Notre Dame d'Afrique crowns a hill above Algiers, and this view places the basilica beside a Carmelite convent with the city and sea spread out below. The basilica was built in the decades after the French conquest of Algeria and became a major site of Marian devotion for the colony's Catholics and for pilgrims arriving by sea. This is a photochrom, a process that printed color from several lithographic stones, each inked by hand after a black-and-white photograph was made. The Detroit Photographic Company sold such views as travel souvenirs around 1899, and the saturated colors reflect the period's appetite for scenes of distant places.
