Algiers drew many late-nineteenth-century travelers eager for pictures of its streets and residents, and this print presents a group of women under the heading "Distinguished Moorish women." It was issued by the Detroit Photographic Company, which held the American rights to the photochrom process. That method printed a photograph from several lithographic stones, each carrying a different color, to produce a soft, painted-looking image. The company sold such views as travel souvenirs, and its titles often reflect the loose ethnic labels of the period rather than the sitters' own names or roles. Today the picture records as much about how Western visitors framed North African life as it does about the women pictured.
