Seated men at small tables in a café in Algiers are the subject of this color view, one of the street-life scenes the Detroit Photographic Company issued around 1899 for travelers and armchair tourists. The company made its images by the photochrom process, a Swiss method licensed for American use, which printed several color layers from a black-and-white negative and gave scenes like this one their soft, hand-tinted look. Cafés were central meeting places in Algiers, where men gathered over coffee and conversation, so the picture records an everyday social custom that appealed strongly to viewers far from North Africa.
