The harbor at Nice, on the French Riviera, is the subject here, with its moored boats and waterfront set against the Mediterranean. By the 1890s Nice had become a favorite winter resort for visitors from Britain and elsewhere in Europe, and its port served both fishing boats and pleasure craft. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that built up color from several lithographic stones, and it was widely sold as a souvenir of travel. The number 1084 stamped in ink on the back is likely a publisher's catalog mark, a useful clue for researchers tracing how these views were issued.
