The record places this harbor view only tentatively in France, and the number 1072 stamped on the back is the clearest link to the series it came from. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s, turned a black-and-white photograph into a color print by inking several lithographic stones by hand, one color at a time. Publishers sold these prints to travelers and armchair tourists in Europe and America, which helps explain the saturated color and orderly waterfront. The date is given only as between about 1890 and 1900.
