Nothing in the record identifies this church with certainty; the title says only that it is "possibly in France," and the catalog number 1204, penciled on the back, is the most specific mark on the print. Its date range of about 1890 to 1900 places it at the height of photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that combined a black-and-white photographic negative with hand-applied color stones. Publishers sold these prints as souvenirs of European travel, so the tinted stone walls and sky give the scene the look of a postcard-like keepsake from that era.
