Giggleswick Church stands in the village of Giggleswick in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, a limestone country of dales and scars. The parish church of St Alkelda sits beside the grammar school that the village is known for, which dates to the mid-sixteenth century. This color view is a photochrom, a process in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to stone and hand-colored in several layers, giving the stonework and surrounding greens a soft, painterly finish. Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in the United States from its England series, offering American buyers a picture of the English countryside in the late 1890s.
