Taken from the school itself, this view looks out over Shrewsbury, the Shropshire market town whose streets wrap around a loop of the River Severn. The school was founded under a charter from Edward VI in 1552, and its buildings have long been part of the town's character. The photochrom process used here, a Swiss method that built up color from several lithographic stones, gave scenes like this a soft, painted quality that made them popular with travelers in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company later offered the image in its 1905 catalog of English views.
