From the Rock II looks down on the River Wye as it loops through the gorge at Symonds Yat, on the border of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, where the river cuts deep between wooded cliffs. The title points to a vantage point on the rock itself, a popular spot for Victorian and Edwardian travelers touring the Wye Valley. The print is a photochrom, a color process from the Swiss firm Photoglob that Detroit Publishing Co. used for its American and British views. Its color was built up from several stone lithographs, each carrying one tint, and the record dates the image between about 1890 and 1900, with this copy listed in the company's 1905 catalog.
