Central Pier reached out over the Irish Sea from the promenade at Blackpool, the Lancashire resort that drew holidaymakers by rail from nearby industrial towns in the late 1800s. Piers like this one offered music, promenading and sea views, and they were a staple of the British seaside holiday. The picture was made by the photochrom process, which built up color from several lithographic stones printed over a black-and-white photograph and then retouched by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company listed it in its 1905 catalog of English views, part of a trade in color souvenirs of far-off places.
