Okehampton, a market town on the western edge of Dartmoor in Devon, is shown here from the northwest, with its rooftops and the surrounding hills laid out across the frame. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss technique that combined a black-and-white photograph with hand-applied color from a series of lithographic stones, which gave these views their soft, painted look. The Detroit Publishing Company offered the image in its 1905 catalog for American buyers, and it reflects the late-nineteenth-century taste for picturesque English towns among travelers and armchair tourists.
