This view shows Lee, a small coastal village in north Devon, where cottages cluster along the slope above the sea. The picture is a photochrom, a process that printed several colored layers from separate stones to give a hand-tinted look. The Photochrom Company developed the method in the 1890s, and the Detroit Publishing Company later issued the prints in America, sold through its catalogs of views from around the world. This example comes from the company's 1905 catalog, which offers a useful glimpse of how British villages were packaged for overseas buyers at the turn of the century.
