Titled with its German name, Hermannstadt, this general view shows a town now called Sibiu, in Transylvania, which belonged to the Hungarian half of Austria-Hungary when the photograph was taken. German-speaking settlers, known as Transylvanian Saxons, had founded the town centuries earlier, and it remained a center of that community's churches, trade and schools. The picture is a photochrom, a color process that combined a black-and-white photograph with hand-prepared lithographic stones, one for each hue, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in the United States around 1900.
