Lussin-Piccolo, now Mali Lošinj in Croatia, sits on a sheltered harbor on the Adriatic island of Lošinj, and this general view takes in the town as it was seen from the water. In the late 1800s the town was a prosperous seafaring center, with shipowners and sea captains whose fortunes were tied to the Austro-Hungarian merchant fleet, and it was also gaining a reputation as a mild-climate resort. This print is a photochrom, an early color process in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to stone plates and hand-colored in layers. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in the United States, so the picture reflects both the Adriatic setting and the commercial interest in travel images of the empire.
