Pola, now Pula in Croatia, was the Austro-Hungarian Navy's principal base on the Adriatic, and this view turns to its naval yard at the edge of the harbor. The Habsburg monarchy had built up the port as a fortified arsenal in the decades after mid-century, when it needed a secure home for its fleet on the Istrian coast. The picture was made with the photochrom process, which used a series of printing stones to add color to a photographic image, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold it in the United States as part of its catalog of views from the empire. Its soft, layered colors give a useful sense of how the era's travel imagery was meant to look.
