Shot from the water, this view of Abbazia (today Opatija) shows the Istrian coast as steamer passengers would have first seen it approaching the resort. In the 1890s Abbazia was a fashionable Adriatic destination for Viennese and other European visitors, and its promenades and waterfront hotels drew travelers seeking mild winters and sea air. The image is a photochrom, a process that added hand-applied color to a photographic base, and Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian views.
