Curzola is the older Italian name for Korčula, an island town off the Dalmatian coast that was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when this view was taken. The general view shows the town as a whole, its stone houses and harbor set against the water, which gives a sense of how closely the settlement was built onto its small peninsula. The island had passed from Venetian to Austrian rule in 1797, and its churches and older streets still reflect the long Venetian period. The image was made by the photochrom process, which transferred a black-and-white negative to lithographic stone and added color by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1905 catalog of views of the empire.
