Busi is a small island off the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic, a place known for its sea caves, which tour boats and travelers visited as the region opened to tourism in the later 1800s. This photochrom print was made by a process developed in Switzerland, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to multiple stone lithographs and then hand-colored, giving the scene its soft, layered tones. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, sold such views as souvenirs and travel illustrations. The image records a landscape of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of the nineteenth century, before the political changes that followed World War I.
