Few places in Dalmatia hold more layers of history than Salona, the Roman provincial capital whose ruins lie just outside modern Split, Croatia. This photochrom shows one of the early Christian basilicas standing among the broken stonework of the old city, a reminder that Salona was a major center of Christianity before the city was abandoned after invasions in the seventh century. The color was added through the photochrom process, which used several lithographic stones to build up hues over a photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers as souvenirs of travel in Europe.
