Few mountains in the Alps glow as vividly at sunset as the Rosengarten, the rose-colored dolomite massif in the Tyrol that gives this view its name. The photochrom process used here, developed in Switzerland, built color from several stone lithographs laid over a black-and-white negative, which suited the pale pinks and grays of the rock. Detroit Publishing Co. sold views like this to American buyers as souvenirs of European travel, and this print appears in its 1905 catalog. At the time the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so the scene shows a landscape now in Italy.
