Gries, a village beside Bozen in the Tyrol, sits at the foot of the Dolomites, and this view looks toward the Rosengarten, a massif whose rock faces often take on a reddish glow at sunset. The Rosengarten is also tied to German legend and drew travelers to the region. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss technique that combined photographs with lithographic stone printing, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in America under the title *Views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire*. The soft, painted look of the finished sheet was part of its appeal to tourists of the period.
