Meran, the spa town in the Tyrolean valleys, drew visitors seeking mild winters and mountain air, and this view turns from that visitor trade to the farming life around it. It shows a peasant house of the kind that dotted the surrounding slopes. The photochrom process behind the print, a Swiss method that combined photography with lithographic stone and hand-applied color, was popular for travel views, and Detroit Publishing Co. listed this one in its 1905 catalog. Dated to the 1890s, the picture records a region then under Habsburg rule.
