Sulden, a village in the Ortler Alps of what was then the Austro-Hungarian Tyrol, sits beneath some of the region's largest glaciers, and this view records that high alpine setting at the end of the nineteenth century. The photochrom process behind it was developed in Zurich, where craftsmen hand-colored a black-and-white photograph using multiple lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. sold these color views in the United States, and this example appears as number 1659 in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes. The mountain village drew climbers and tourists of the period, and the print shows how travel photography presented the Alps to distant audiences.
