Sulden, a mountain village at the foot of the Ortler range in the Tyrolean Alps, is the subject here, with the Schöntaufspitze and Suldenspitze rising above it. The print is a photochrom, a color process that layered several lithographic stones over a black-and-white photograph and was often finished by hand. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers in the 1890s and 1900s as travel souvenirs, and this one comes from its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes. The range is worth noticing for its glaciers and sharp peaks, which were already drawing mountaineers to the valley when the photograph was made.
