The Sella Group is a rugged mountain massif in the Dolomites, then part of the Tyrol region of Austria-Hungary, and this view shows its rock formations in vivid color. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that built color from several hand-inked stone lithographic plates made from a black-and-white photographic negative. Detroit Publishing Company, which held the American rights, issued this print in its 1905 catalog of views of the empire. The bold hues show how the process was used to make distant landscapes appealing to travelers and armchair viewers alike.
