The view centers on the Rosengarten, the rose-colored limestone massif of the Dolomites, which glows pink and orange at sunset and gave the range its German name. The village of St. Cyprian, known in Italian as San Cipriano, sits at the foot of these peaks, in a valley that belonged to the Tyrol crown land of Austria-Hungary when this view was made. The image is a photochrom, a process in which several stone lithographs were printed in layers to produce color, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American buyers as souvenirs of European travel.
