Sarnthal, today's Sarntal valley, runs north of Bozen, and this view pairs the village of Ried with Runkelstein, a castle that overlooks the town. Runkelstein's walls carry late medieval frescoes drawn from courtly romance and legend, which drew visitors through the nineteenth century. This photochrom was probably made in the 1890s by the Zürich firm Photoglob, whose hand-retouched color process gave tourist views a painterly softness. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in America and listed it in its 1905 catalog.
