Lake Traunsee stretches south from the town of Gmunden in Upper Austria, and this view looks across the water toward Traunkirchen on the opposite shore. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that combined photographs with multiple lithographic stones to produce vivid prints. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog as part of a series on the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The print dates from roughly the 1890s, when Salzkammergut lakes were becoming popular with tourists.
