The ornate electric elevator in Graz, the Styrian capital, carried riders up the slope toward the Schlossberg, the wooded hill that rises above the old town. Electric traction was still new in the 1890s, and lifts like this one were a visible sign of how quickly Austro-Hungarian cities were modernizing their transit. This print comes from the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to stone and then colored by hand with several layers of ink, giving the scene its soft, saturated tones. Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America under license from the Swiss firm that developed the process, so the picture reflects both European engineering and the American market for travel images.
