The Graben is one of the old central squares of Vienna, and this photochrom shows it as it looked in the years around 1890 to 1900, when the city was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Graben lies in the heart of the inner city, a long open space lined with baroque buildings and the Plague Column, the Pestsäule, erected in the late 1600s. The print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photochrom process turned black-and-white negatives into vivid color views sold to travelers and collectors. Its catalog listing, number 6342, ties it to the firm's 1905 series of Austro-Hungarian views.
