Two young women in traditional Carniolan dress stand for this photochrom, a region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that is now part of Slovenia. The process was developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in Zürich in the 1880s, and the Detroit Publishing Co. sold its color views in America, including this one from its 1905 catalog. Because the image was made in the 1890s, it preserves a record of regional costume and everyday life in the empire shortly before its collapse in 1918.
