The title "Maria Lake" uses the German name for Lake Bled, in Carniola, a crown land of Austria-Hungary, now part of Slovenia. The name refers to the Church of the Assumption of Mary on a small island in the lake, which is the view's focal point. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this print under its 1905 catalog, using the photochrom process, a color lithographic method that layered several stone impressions to approximate a painted or photographed scene. Its many views of the empire's landscapes and towns were popular with travelers and armchair tourists of the period.
