From the hilltop pilgrimage church of Maria Plain, northwest of the city, this view looks back over Salzburg toward the fortress of Hohensalzburg, which has overlooked the old town since the Middle Ages. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich in the 1880s that combined photography with color lithography to produce vivid, glossy images. Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States, and this copy bears its 1905 catalog number, 9321.
