Lussingrande, the harbor town named in the title, sits on the Adriatic coast that the record places in Istria, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The photochrom process used for this view was a Swiss method that produced color prints from photographs, with each color plate hand-worked before printing, so the scene has a painted, saturated look that black-and-white photography could not offer. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes, which sold the images to American buyers eager for pictures of distant places. Comparing the town's waterfront and buildings with later photographs can show how the coastline changed over the following century.
