Lovrana, a small fishing town a few kilometers west of Abbazia on the Istrian coast, appears here alongside its better-known neighbor. Abbazia, now Opatija in Croatia, grew into a fashionable seaside resort in the late 19th century after rail links brought visitors from Vienna and other Central European cities. This view comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method of multicolor printing from photographs that the Detroit Publishing Company distributed in the United States. The soft color and the careful blending of sea, pine, and villa gardens reflect how the process was used to make distant places look inviting to armchair travelers.
