Volosca, the fishing village on the Kvarner coast of Istria, sits right beside the resort town of Abbazia, now Opatija in Croatia. In the 1890s the two places made a striking pair: Abbazia was a fashionable seaside retreat for Habsburg society, while Volosca's boats and nets belonged to a much older way of life. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Swiss firm Photoglob, which transferred a photograph into color through a multi-stone lithographic process. The result gives the harbor a soft, painted look that suits the scene's quiet working character.
