Mariazell, a mountain town in Styria, is known for its basilica and its long history as a Marian pilgrimage site, drawing visitors for centuries. This print shows the town as a general view, so the eye takes in the church and surrounding buildings together. It was made by the photochrom process, a color method that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph, and it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The bright, hand-tinted look of photochroms was prized by travelers and collectors of the period, and this example preserves how a small alpine pilgrimage town appeared around 1900.
