The middle fall of the Kohlbach stream drops through the granite country of the High Tatras, a range then within the Kingdom of Hungary in Austria-Hungary and now on the Slovak-Polish border. The photochrom process behind this print, developed in Switzerland, printed color from several lithographic stones, which gives the water and rock a soft, painted quality. This copy comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of views of the empire, a series sold to American buyers who wanted scenes of distant European places to display at home.
