Griefenstein is a castle in Lower Austria, the northeastern state that surrounds Vienna, and this print shows the site as it looked in the late 1890s. The photochrom process used to make it was developed in Switzerland, where the Photoglob company hand-colored each print through a series of stone lithographs made from a single photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, sold these views to American buyers as travel souvenirs, and this copy appears in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian scenes. The vivid, flat colors reflect the method rather than the actual tones of the landscape.
