Hainburg an der Donau sits on the Danube in Lower Austria, close to where the river marks the edge of the Hungarian lands of the Habsburg monarchy. The town's medieval walls, gates and castle ruins on the hill above it made it a favorite subject for travel photographers of the period. This view is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that colored a black-and-white photograph by hand using a set of lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. sold these color views to American buyers in the 1890s and early 1900s, and the company's 1905 catalog listed this one among its Austro-Hungarian scenes.
