This photochrom print shows a group of peasants in Bosnia, a province the Austro-Hungarian Empire had administered since 1878. Photochrom was a color process developed in Switzerland that colored black-and-white photographs by hand-registered lithographic stones, and it was widely used for travel views in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Co., which held American rights to the process, issued this image in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian views under print number 17387. The record dates the picture only to between about 1890 and 1900, so its exact year is uncertain, but it captures how Western audiences were shown the empire's rural peoples.
