A memorial to Lajos Kossuth stands at the center of this view of Miskolc, a city in northeastern Hungary. Kossuth led the 1848 revolt against Habsburg rule, and by the late 1800s his name was central to Hungarian national identity, so monuments to him appeared in many towns. The print uses the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined several lithographic stones to produce soft color. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1905 catalog of Austro-Hungarian views, though the photograph itself dates from the 1890s.
