Rather than a town in Tyrol, this view shows Kronstadt, the German name for Brașov in Transylvania. The record's question mark over "Rottenberg" suggests the original caption was uncertain. Photochrom printed color from several stone plates made from a photographic negative, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these views of places across Austria-Hungary. Kronstadt was a center of the Transylvanian Saxon community, known for its medieval walls and churches, so the picture records a city then within the Hungarian half of the empire.
