Lower Lydbrook, a village in a steep valley of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, is the subject here, shown as a broad general view rather than a single street or building. The photochrom process behind it, a Swiss-developed method of making color prints from photographs, was licensed in America by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold its English views through printed catalogues in the early 1900s. Dating to roughly 1890 to 1900, the print reflects a period when travel photography and affordable color reproduction brought attention to small English villages and their surroundings.
