Sabastiyah, the hilltop village the record calls Samaria, stands on the ruins of the capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel, where the Omride kings built their palaces in the ninth century B.C. Herod the Great later rebuilt the site and named it Sebaste after the emperor Augustus, and a version of that Greek name survives in the village's modern Arabic name. This view comes from a Holy Land series issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photochrom prints, a color process developed in Switzerland that was popular with American travelers and Bible readers around 1900.
