The Golden Gate is the sealed double gateway in the eastern wall of Jerusalem's Old City, overlooking the Kidron Valley. Its masonry dates to the Byzantine period, and the Ottoman builders who rebuilt the city walls in the 1530s closed it off. This print comes from the Photochrom series that Detroit Publishing Co. issued in the United States, a color process that used multiple lithographic stones to tint a photograph, and the catalog entry records it as print number 15025 from the company's 1905 list of Holy Land views. The gate's closure made it a subject of tradition and speculation, since many believed it would be the entrance for a messianic arrival.
