This view looks across Jerusalem from Mount Scopus, the ridge northeast of the Old City, a vantage that gave travelers a wide panorama of the walls and rooftops below. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Photochrom Company in Zurich that combined a photographic negative with hand-applied color from stone plates. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to many of these images, sold them to tourists and armchair travelers through its catalogues, and this example is listed in its 1905 catalog of Holy Land views. Its soft, painterly color was meant to make distant places feel vividly present.
