Bethany, the village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives about two miles from Jerusalem, is tied in the Gospels to Lazarus, Mary, and Martha, and to Jesus's visits there before the Passion. This view shows the village as a visitor of the 1890s would have seen it, from a distance and within its hillside setting. The image is a photochrom, a process that transferred a black-and-white photograph onto multiple lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, so the final print looks like a painted scene. Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States as travel views of the Holy Land.
