Few views in this series look inside a dwelling, which makes this court of a house in Damascus worth a closer look. Courtyard houses of the Syrian city were built around an open central court, often with a fountain or pool, and were screened from the street by high walls, so family life unfolded inward. The photochrom process printed its colors from a series of lithographic stones, giving the scene its soft, painterly palette. The view dates from the 1890s and was later listed in a Detroit Publishing Company catalog from 1905, which sold such images to American buyers as glimpses of the Holy Land.
