A Bedouin group in the Holy Land is the subject of this color view, catalogued by the Detroit Publishing Company as print number 15115. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s, transferred a black-and-white photograph onto lithographic stones, one for each color, so that the finished print had a painted look that travelers found appealing. The Detroit Publishing Company held American rights to many of these images and sold them through catalogues to tourists and armchair travelers, and this one appears in its 1905 listing of Holy Land views. Bedouin nomads were a favored subject for such pictures, which often showed them as a picturesque contrast to the towns and sacred sites nearby.
